A Detroit Pastor Said What Everyone Was Thinking After This Muslim Senate Candidate Quoted Jesus to Christians

In 2012, Democrats booed God on the floor of their own national convention.

Now three of their Senate candidates are quoting scripture.

But a Detroit pastor just said what everyone was thinking after this Muslim Senate candidate quoted Jesus to Christians.

The Script They're All Reading From

James Talarico declared that God is non-binary.

Then he said atheists are more Christ-like than his Christian colleagues.

Then – caught on tape – he told a podcast he's "a Christian who hates Christianity."

Now he's standing in Texas churches telling congregations Jesus would have supported abortion rights.

Talarico won the Democrat Senate nomination in Texas anyway.

Abdul El-Sayed is a Muslim running for Michigan's open Senate seat.

He appeared on something called "The Progressive Christians Podcast" and told the host that Jesus – quoting El-Sayed directly – "was considered radical in his time, too."

The same El-Sayed whose Republican opponent's ads call him "the most radical Senate candidate in America."

The same El-Sayed who made opposition to Israel a centerpiece of his Michigan primary campaign.

In Florida, Angie Nixon – a card-carrying member of the Democratic Socialists of America – stood in a Jacksonville church and told the congregation, "Jesus was a radical."

Nixon beat Alexander Vindman – Trump's first impeachment witness – for the Democrat nomination.

Three candidates.

Three states.

One script.

The Detroit Pastor Who Saw It Coming

Pastor Lorenzo Sewell of Detroit wasn't impressed.

"They know that they need to appeal to Christians," Sewell told Fox News. "But the question becomes: What is their agenda for the church?"

"They are trying to virtue-signal, placate, and try to propagate to Christians," Sewell said, "because they represent the largest religious voting bloc in America."

Then he said the one thing Democrats can't answer: Donald Trump is the only president who has had an actual agenda for the local church.

"You won't hear Jesus in the DNC," Sewell said. "You won't hear Jesus spoken about through the real Jesus – the God of the Bible."

He's right.

And that's the tell.

They've Been Running This Play Since 2004

Howard Dean stood in front of cameras in December 2003 and announced that Jesus Christ was effectively a liberal Democrat.

He lost the nomination.

John Kerry spent 2004 quoting scripture at black churches across the South.

He lost to George W. Bush by 3 million votes.

Barack Obama leaned on his Trinity United Church of Christ membership in 2008 – until Reverend Jeremiah Wright's "God damn America" sermons blew up the strategy entirely.

The script is always the same.

Jesus fed the hungry – that's socialism.

Jesus welcomed strangers – that's open borders.

Jesus healed the sick – that's Medicare for All.

And every single time, actual Christians see through it.

Because actual Christians know the rest of the story.

Jesus didn't build a government program.

He changed hearts.

The socialist left wants to change your wallet.

What's Actually Happening Here

Talarico isn't cynical – he's worse.

He genuinely believes he's reinterpreting Christianity for a modern audience.

He went to seminary.

He knows the texts.

He's decided the texts mean what he needs them to mean.

That's not progressive Christianity.

That's the oldest heresy in the book – the idea that you can extract Jesus from His own words and retrofit Him for your politics.

El-Sayed's version is bolder still.

He's quoting Jesus to Christian podcast audiences while telling Muslim audiences in Detroit that America is trying to tell them they don't belong.

He's running two campaigns in one state – one for each room – and hoping nobody compares notes.

Sewell is comparing notes.

And so are the 65 million evangelical Christians who gave Trump his margins in 2024.

The Democrats booed God at their 2012 convention in Charlotte – on camera, three times, with the whole country watching.

Twelve years later they think Christians forgot.

They didn't.
