In many ways, Democrats suffered a disastrous 2020 election cycle.
Democrats lost seats in the House and failed to win an outright Senate majority.
And now a top Democrat just revealed they were quitting this high-ranking Senate post.
Democrats were furious with California Senator Dianne Feinstein after her performance as the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee during the Amy Coney Barrett confirmation hearings.
What especially infuriated Democrats the most was Feinstein hugging Republican Senator Judiciary Committee Lindsey Graham after the committee voted to send Barrett’s nomination to the Senate where she ultimately won confirmation to the Supreme Court.
Feinstein saw the writing on the wall and POLITICO reported that Feinstein would no longer serve as the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein plans to step down as the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee in the next Congress, after facing blowback from progressives for her handling of Amy Coney Barrett’s contentious Supreme Court confirmation hearing.
Three people familiar with the matter told POLITICO, which Feinstein soon confirmed.
Feinstein confirmed that decision to step down in a statement.
“After serving as the lead Democrat on the Judiciary Committee for four years, I will not seek the chairmanship or ranking member position in the next Congress,” Feinstein declared. “I look forward to continuing to serve as a senior Democrat on the Judiciary, Intelligence, Appropriations and Rules committees as we work with the Biden administration.”
Democrats want a partisan knife fighter as their top figure on the Judiciary Committee.
Feinstein was a leftist, but she was also an institutionalist who claimed to oppose gutting the filibuster.
Liberals were furious that Democrats could not stop Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation from the Supreme Court and they were looking for a scapegoat and this is why Dianne Feinstein stepped down.
