Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s career may be over just as quickly as it began.
But this time Ocasio-Cortez is facing trouble of her own making.
And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was hit with one threat that could throw her out of Congress.
Over the course of the last year, speculation only grew that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would mount a primary challenge to Chuck Schumer in 2022.
This past fall, Ocasio-Cortez told Vanity Fair she didn’t intend to spend her entire career in the House of Representatives.
And then, just recently, Ocasio-Cortez told The Intercept’s podcast that she believed the Democrats needed to replace Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi as their Congressional leadership.
But now the Democrat Party establishment is beginning to strike back.
New York State Democrat Party chairman Jay Jacobs blasted the idea of Ocasio-Cortez running against Chuck Schumer as a selfish undertaking.
“I think it would be a primary driven by ambition more than by need,” Chairman Jacobs told the New York Post.
Jacobs predicted that Schumer would “absolutely” defeat Ocasio-Cortez in a Democrat Primary and that by challenging Schumer, Ocasio-Cortez would only be hurting her own constituents.
“Chuck Schumer has been a progressive force in the state for decades,” Jacobs added “She has a constituency that admires her and supports her, and they’re in her community, and I think it would be a loss for them if she were to do that.”
Democrat Party bigwigs have reason to fear an Ocasio-Cortez primary challenge to Chuck Schumer.
In 2018, Ocasio-Cortez won her Congressional seat ousting ten-term incumbent Joe Crowley.
Crowley was the number four Democrat in the House and viewed as the next in line to succeed Nancy Pelosi.
If Ocasio-Cortez ran against Schumer, she would be a formidable challenger.
And given her ability to raise money and generate attention on social media combined with her support from the grassroots of the Democrat Party, she could very well end Schumer’s career.
But top names in the Democrat Party are trying to keep her out of the race by warning she will have to give up her seat in Congress to stage an underdog campaign.
