After the Supreme Court ended legal protections for the abortion-on-demand industry, the Biden regime began lashing out against pro-life Americans.
A little-known federal law, the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act (FACE Act), makes it a federal crime to interfere with anyone providing or seeking an abortion.
The Justice Department has charged at least 16 pro-life activists with violating the FACE Act, which is punishable by up to 11 years in federal prison.
Roger Severino worked in the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, which enforces the FACE Act, under former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
He told the Daily Caller that the Biden regime is “weaponizing” the FACE Act to drop the hammer on pro-life activists.
First-time offenders previously faced a maximum sentence of six months in jail.
However, the Biden regime is now throwing the book at pro-life activists.
Severino said that he’s “never heard of a charge being so excessive” as the 11-year maximum prison sentence and $350,000 fine sought by Merrick Garland’s Justice Department for violating the FACE Act.
“This is law enforcement run amok,” Severino said. “The FACE Act had always been enforced very rarely, because the pro-life movement is a movement of peace.”
“All of a sudden, they are inventing cases and doing sham prosecutions in an Election Year for purely political purposes to go after their political enemies,” Severino added.
The FACE Act is also supposed to protect pro-life pregnancy centers and house of worships from attacks by pro-abortion fanatics.
But the Biden regime is ignoring the destruction caused by pro-abortion radicals in the wake of the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
The Catholic News Service reported that 33 churches and 54 pro-life pregnancy centers have been attacked this year.
Yet Garland’s Justice Department hasn’t brought a single charge against violent abortion fanatics under the FACE Act.
Ken Cuccinelli, a Homeland Security official under Donald Trump, said the Justice Department’s targeting of pro-lifer Americans was an act of political vengeance.
“This has nothing to do with public safety,” Cuccinelli said. “This is political virtue signaling to the radical-Left base that has control of this administration.”
The blatant political targeting by the Biden regime is going to backfire in a major way during the Midterm elections.
“I think it will thoroughly backfire on them. I can’t think of a way they’ll get one more vote because they arrest these people, but I guarantee you, a lot more pro-lifers will come out than might otherwise have for the Midterm elections,” Cuccinelli explained.
