Impeachment is now set to move to a Senate trial.
Democrats are plotting their strategy to convict the President and remove Donald Trump from office.
And now Chuck Schumer wrote one letter claiming this smoking gun would seal Trump’s impeachment.
Back in 1999 when the Senate conducted Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial, Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott and Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle hashed out rules on the length of the trial and witness testimony, which passed the Senate unanimously.
This time, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer knows the Senate will likely exonerate President Trump.
So Schumer is throwing up a Hail Mary demanding controversial witnesses testify, which Democrats hope will provide the smoking gun leading the Senate to convict President Trump.
In a letter sent Sunday to McConnell, Schumer laid out a proposal under which the Senate would call several witnesses the White House has refused to make available in the House’s impeachment inquiry, including President Donald Trump’s acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and former national security adviser John Bolton. Schumer also requested additional documents that the president has declined to provide.
It was an aggressive play from the chamber’s top Democrat and one certain to be rejected by most Republicans. But the cool response from one of the few GOP senators undecided on impeachment highlights the partisan tensions consuming the Senate before the trial even starts.
In fact, many Republicans retorted that if Schumer wants to go down the path of calling in Trump administration witnesses for the Senate impeachment trial, they too can play that game.
But Schumer should be careful what he wishes for.
If he wants to call Mick Mulvaney or John Bolton to testify, Republicans will add Hunter Biden, Adam Schiff, and alleged whistleblower Eric Ciaramella to the witness list.
Republicans want a short trial with no witnesses to put this impeachment hoax to bed.
Democrats are feverishly working to turn it into a circus because the facts are not on their side.
