Robert Mueller’s appointment as special counsel or the Russia investigation was hailed by the media and establishment politicians.
He will have unlimited resources to dig into Trump’s campaign and his affairs.
Special counsels are a nightmare.
They have one case, a roster of lawyers, millions of dollars and an implied mandate to bring charges.
So far, the Russia scandal is nothing but a fake news conspiracy theory.
No evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government exists.
Byron York wrote in the Washington Examiner that the Senate was on the verge of wrapping up their investigation and admitting there was no collusion:
“It roils and extends an investigation that, on Capitol Hill at least, was moving toward a conclusion on the allegation at the heart of the matter: whether Donald Trump or his associates colluded with Russians to fix the 2016 election. By the time Rosenstein made his move, Senate investigators were becoming more and more confident that there was no collusion. They couldn’t say for sure — they were cautious to say something could still come up — but the collusion charge was looking like a non-starter. There were also indications that the FBI’s counter-intelligence investigation was finding the same thing. Now, the appointment of Mueller essentially pushes the re-start button on the investigation.”
Now the investigation could linger through Trump’s Presidency.
York writes that the last special prosecutor – Patrik Fitzgerald – knew who leaked Valerie Plame’s name to Bob Novak in December 2003 but kept the investigation going until March 2007, where White House Aide Scooter Libby was charged with crimes unrelated to the initial inquiry:
“ It raises the possibility of the Trump-Russia investigation needlessly lasting the entire duration of the Trump presidency. The last time there was an even slightly similar situation, the appointment of special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald to investigate the Valerie Plame-CIA leak case, the mostly fruitless probe went on for years and years. (One of the loudest voices demanding the appointment of a special counsel back then, as now: Sen. Charles Schumer.) Prosecutor Fitzgerald actually knew the identity of the leaker when he was appointed on December 30, 2003, yet kept the investigation going until March 2007 with the conviction of Scooter Libby, not for leaking but for perjury and obstruction of justice. There were no charges on the core event of the case, the Plame leak. If the Mueller investigation lasts as long as the CIA leak case, it will extend well into 2020.”
The Deep State and the media – which have been colluding in a plot to essentially overthrow the duly elected government of the United States – realized the Russia investigation was on its last legs and kept up a drum beat for a special counsel.
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein eventually relented and now the left has a fresh chance to launch a wide ranging probe to uncover even the tiniest shred of scandal they can try and use to drive Trump from office.
