James Talarico told a room full of Sierra Club activists that capitalism was a system of oppression that needed to be torn down.
Now the video is out, and even CNN couldn't bury it.
And Donald Trump just gave Texas Democrat James Talarico one brutal nickname that will follow him all the way to November.
What Trump Said From the Oval Office
Trump didn't mince words when Breitbart News asked him about James Talarico's 2020 comments bashing capitalism.
"That's one of the least of the bad things he has said," Trump told reporters Wednesday. "They have a name, a nickname for him. I don't want to use it, but the name happens to be 'Talafreako' because he is one of the worst candidates I've ever seen."
From a president who has seen a lot of candidates, that's a verdict.
The comments came in response to a CNN KFile investigation – and when CNN is the one digging up your socialist Zoom calls, you know the tape is bad – that unearthed a 2020 Sierra Club virtual forum where Talarico bracketed capitalism alongside white supremacy and climate change, declaring all three needed to be dismantled together.
Talarico didn't stop there.
He compared Texas's oil and gas industry – the economic backbone of a state with 30 million people – to leading the cassette tape market in the 1980s.
"That industry is not gonna last," he told the Sierra Club crowd.
His campaign's response: "James is a proud capitalist."
Six years of private Zoom calls apparently didn't make it into the press release.
Why Texas Voters Need to See Every Second of That Video
Talarico spent years selling himself as the one Democrat reasonable enough to compete in Texas.
The Sierra Club tape blows that up completely.
In the video, he didn't hedge.
He didn't say capitalism "has problems."
He called it an "oppressive system" in the same breath as white supremacy and said the task was to begin "dismantling them" – plural.
That's not a position that "missed the mark," as his spokesperson lamely claimed.

That's a worldview.
And Texas voters – who handed Trump a 14-point victory in 2024 – deserve to know that the man asking for their Senate vote spent 2020 telling leftist environmentalists he wanted to tear down the economic system that built their state.
While Trump was telling the Oval Office press corps that Ken Paxton was "the best, the single strongest, smartest attorney general in the United States," Democrats were scrambling to explain why their candidate's 2020 socialist roadshow wasn't socialist.
This Race Just Got a Lot Easier for Paxton
The Texas Senate race has been competitive.
Polls through the summer showed Talarico trading leads with Paxton in a state Trump won by double digits.
Democrats poured money in, convinced that 2026 was their year to flip Texas.
Now their candidate has an Oval Office nickname and a six-year-old video of himself calling capitalism oppression.
Paxton wasn't a perfect candidate going into this race.
His impeachment saga gave Democrats ammunition, and they used it.

But there's a difference between a Republican with a legal history and a Democrat who told environmentalists he wanted to dismantle the American economic system – then pretended he never said it.
Trump knows this dynamic cold.
He didn't just insult Talarico in that Oval Office exchange.
He made the closing argument of the entire Texas Senate race in one sentence: Ken Paxton was the best attorney general in America, and the guy running against him thinks capitalism is oppression.
Texas voters will decide which one of those things bothers them more.
