Donald Trump just said the one thing that Kevin McCarthy was hoping to hear

Kevin McCarthy lost three straight votes to become the next Speaker of the House.

Then all hell broke loose.

And Donald Trump just said the one thing that Kevin McCarthy was hoping to hear.

A group of 20 conservatives banded together to block McCarthy from winning the Speaker’s gavel.

McCarthy’s opponents pushed for a package of rules changes that would defang the Swamp and allow conservatives to wield power in the House proportionate to their numbers.

But McCarthy rejected making concessions to conservatives, which led to a stalemate.

The House eventually adjourned without picking a Speaker on the first ballot for the first time in 100 years.

After failing on three bids to become Speaker of the House, McCarthy claimed he was the only Republican who could win the 217 votes necessary to replace Nancy Pelosi.

“Is there anybody in the conference that can win?” McCarthy told reporters. “I don’t think that’s there. So we can go ‘round and ‘round. It will either turn out that someone will make a mistake and they’ll elect a Democrat or we’re going to find a way to work together to be able to govern.”

When asked about President Trump endorsing his bid for Speaker, McCarthy said Trump “has already reiterated his support.”

Trump doubled down on his support for McCarthy the following day by calling on all House Republicans to vote for him for Speaker.

“Some really good conversations took place last night, and it’s now time for all of our GREAT Republican House Members to VOTE FOR KEVIN, CLOSE THE DEAL, TAKE THE VICTORY, & WATCH CRAZY NANCY PELOSI FLY BACK HOME TO A VERY BROKEN CALIFORNIA,THE ONLY SPEAKER IN U.S. HISTORY TO HAVE LOST THE “HOUSE” TWICE! REPUBLICANS, DO NOT TURN A GREAT TRIUMPH INTO A GIANT & EMBARRASSING DEFEAT. IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE, YOU DESERVE IT. Kevin McCarthy will do a good job, and maybe even a GREAT JOB – JUST WATCH!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

But will conservatives opposed to McCarthy listen?

Many Trump supporters were upset with him endorsing the leadership that failed Republicans in the last election.

And McCarthy has long identified with the Swamp and not conservative policies or causes.

It is unlikely that Trump’s statement will cause any of the 20 conservatives to flip and support McCarthy.

But it could keep the dam from breaking on the opposition to McCarthy.
