Donald Trump is still the most important figure in the Republican Party.
Most of the candidates running for President in 2024 want to be on his good side.
But Donald Trump just shut down a Trump critic with a humiliating put down.
Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley wants to run for President in 2024 as a Mitt Romney-style Republican but with MAGA credibility due to her short time in the Trump administration.
But Haley found herself on the outs with Trump and his supporters after an interview with POLITICO where Haley declared that Donald Trump had no future in the Republican Party after the January 6th riot at the Capitol.
Haley thought impeachment and the riot would destroy Trump’s political standing in the Republican Party – only to see it not move an inch after impeachment.
In fact, some polls showed Trump still has an approval rating over 80% with Republicans.
Haley knew she blew it with the POLITICO interview and sought to make good with Trump by having a meeting to explain herself.
But the gambit blew up in her face as Trump believed her to be a snake in the grass and turned down the meeting.
POLITICO Playbook reported, “NIKKI HALEY reached out to former President DONALD TRUMP on Wednesday to request a sit-down at Mar-a-Lago, but a source familiar tells Playbook that he turned her down. The two haven’t spoken since the insurrection on Jan. 6th, when Haley blasted Trump for inciting his supporters to storm the Capitol.”
Haley is a Mitt Romney Republican who believes in open borders, endless foreign wars, and believes the Republican base to be filled with racists.
The former UN Ambassador knows she is ideologically out of step with her party and wants to have as much pro-Trump cover as possible for her expected 2024 campaign.
However, Haley displayed the clumsy political instincts of Mitt Romney when she thought she could distance herself from Trump and then wiggle herself back into his good graces.
