The Robert Mueller witch hunt has dragged on for seven months.
But it all may be coming to an end.
That’s because Trump is working on a deal with the special counsel.
Trump’s lawyers are proposing a scenario where the President submits to a limited interview with Mueller in exchange for the special counsel agreeing to a deadline to wrap up the Trump related portion of his investigation.
The Wall Street Journal reports:
“President Donald Trump’s lawyers are seeking to negotiate a deal with special counsel Robert Mueller that uses an interview with the president as leverage to spur a conclusion to the Russia investigation, according to a person familiar with the discussions.
The president’s legal team is considering telling Mr. Mueller that Mr. Trump would agree to a sit-down interview based on multiple considerations, including that the special counsel commit to a date for concluding at least the Trump-related portion of the investigation. One idea is to suggest a deadline of 60 days from the date of the interview, the person said.
Another consideration for the legal team is reaching an agreement with Mr. Mueller on the scope of his questioning of the president, which they expect to focus largely on his decision to fire former national security adviser Mike Flynn and former FBI director James Comey, according to people familiar with the matter.”
Many experts and Trump supporters do not want the President to talk to Mueller at all.
The purpose of Mueller questioning Trump would not be to clear anything up or get the story straight.
Mueller wants to question Trump so he can catch him in a process crime like Michael Flynn.
If Trump misremembers a date or who attended a meeting, Mueller can claim the President lied to investigators and use that as a basis to recommend Congress impeach Trump.
There is no upside to an interview with the special counsel.
Trump would only face greater legal exposure.
Since Mueller has nothing on collusion, he needs to create a crime and an interview with the President would afford him an opportunity to concoct a reason for Congress to remove Trump from office.
