Harvard thought changing the words would save them.
But the words never mattered according to a new IRS rule.
And Donald Trump’s Treasury just told 18,000 colleges that the woke rebrand is over.
The Scheme Bessent Just Exposed
These schools had a plan after the Supreme Court killed race-based admissions in 2023.
Stop saying "racial preferences" and start saying "equity," "inclusion," and "diversity-enhancing practices."
Same thumb on the scale, just with new vocabulary.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called it exactly what it is.
“Under President Trump, this Administration is standing up for America’s students by ensuring racial discrimination has no place in American education,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said. "Schools rebranding race-based preferences as equitable, inclusive, or diversity-enhancing does not change their discriminatory nature.”
IRS Chief Executive Frank Bisignano made the consequences clear.
“Private educational institutions that promote discriminatory practices will no longer be afforded the benefits of federal tax-exempt status,” Bisignano said. “Today’s proposed regulations put institutions on notice and schools that continue to engage in racial discrimination should expect to lose that status.”

About 18,000 private schools – from elite universities down to trade schools – are now on the clock.
“Under the proposed rule, a private school would not qualify for Federal tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) if it adopts, maintains, or enforces a policy or practice that discriminates on the basis of race, color, or national or ethnic origin,” a press release stated. “The rule would apply across admissions, educational policies, scholarships and loans, athletics, and every other school-administered or school-supported program.”
The rule takes effect May 31, 2027.
The Left Cheered This Exact Move Once
Here is the part that should make your blood boil.
This has happened before.
In 1976, the IRS stripped Bob Jones University in South Carolina of its tax-exempt status for banning interracial dating.
Bob Jones fought back all the way to the Supreme Court.
The Court ruled 8-1 in 1983 that universities practicing racial discrimination lose their nonprofit protections – because tax-exempt status doesn't belong to organizations that violate fundamental public policy.

The Left cited that ruling for four decades as proof the government could and should strip status from institutions that discriminate by race.
Now the Treasury is applying the same ruling to Harvard's DEI machine – and suddenly the principle they spent forty years celebrating is a constitutional crisis.
They didn't object to the weapon.
They just thought they'd always be the ones holding it.
What the Tax Exemption Actually Buys
The Left wants you to think this is a paperwork fight.
It isn't.
Elite university endowments run into the tens of billions of dollars.
Tax-exempt status means that money compounds largely tax-free, donations are deductible, and the entire financial architecture of elite higher education stays intact.
Strip that status and Harvard stops being a charity.
It becomes a corporation – and gets taxed like one.
The new rule is also careful about what stays legal.
Schools can still weigh academic achievement, economic hardship, military family status, first-generation college status, and where a student comes from.
Merit. Need. Geography.

Everything except race.
The schools panicking right now are the ones who built admissions systems designed to produce specific racial outcomes – and they know they can't make the math work without race on the form.
Bessent just told them that math will cost them their tax-exempt status.
That's not a regulation.
That's a reckoning.
