Unfortunately, for much of America, Hillary Clinton is never far from the headlines.
This time it was Republicans rejoicing.
And Hillary Clinton got one nasty surprise on her birthday that left her red with rage.
In the final days of the 2020 campaign, Senate Republicans, fighting to keep their majority, made confirming Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court the centerpiece of their closing message to voters.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell drove that point home during one of his final campaign swings when he noted that Republicans’ present to Hillary Clinton on her birthday was confirming Amy Coney Barrett.
“It was a wonderful birthday present for Hillary Clinton to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court Monday night on her birthday,” McConnell told supporters on Wednesday during a campaign stop in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, according to the New York Post. “Oh, I’m sure she was so grateful, so grateful.”
Barrett’s confirmation was the culmination of the bet Senate Republicans made four years ago to reject Barack Obama’s nominee to fill Antonin Scalia’s seat.
Voters elected Trump and that led to President Trump appointing three new Supreme Court Justices and establishing a six to three Republican majority on the court.
Democrats consider those seats “stolen.”
But in each case, Republicans exercised their Constitutional authority to advise and consent on the President’s Supreme Court nominee.
Democrats – including Hillary Clinton – called that “illegitimate.”
Republicans – rightly point out – that all of those Supreme Court maneuvers were the result of Republicans winning elections in 2014 and 2016.
For generations, Republicans have sought a stable majority on the court.
Thanks to Donald Trump, they may have finally achieved one.
