James Carville wrote a New York Times op-ed in October 2024 titled "Three Reasons I'm Certain Kamala Harris Will Win."

But James Carville just made one wild prediction about Donald Trump that left JD Vance shaking his head in disbelief.
The Prediction That Makes No Sense
Carville appeared on The Daily Beast Podcast on August 5 and laid out his theory with the same unshakable confidence he had right before the 2024 election collapsed his entire worldview.
"He's going to lose so decisively in November," Carville said. "His power is going to just seep right out."
The scenario he described goes like this: Republicans lose the midterms badly, Trump's power evaporates, he calls J.D. Vance into the Oval Office and tells him – and Carville claims to know the exact words – "J.D., I've decided I'm going to resign. You're going to be the president. Your first act, as soon as you're sworn in, you're going to sign a pardon. Pardon me for everything imaginable."
There's just one problem with this entire construction.

He posted a video titled "Trump Will Be Gone, Sooner Than You Think!" in March 2026.
He doubled down in June.
He set the deadline at Easter 2027.
Now he's moved the goalposts to right after the midterms.
The deadline keeps shifting.
The confidence never does.
The Man Behind the Prediction
Carville made his name as the chief strategist behind Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign – a genuinely impressive piece of political work from 34 years ago.
Since then, his track record looks considerably different.
He predicted Harris would win the presidency.
She lost by more than seven million votes.
He admitted afterward that one of his three reasons for certainty was "just a feeling."

He predicted Democrats would take back power and reshape the Supreme Court.
He predicted Trump was done after January 6.
On Trump's survival instincts specifically, Carville told listeners that Clinton's political comeback after the 1994 midterms proved nothing because "Donald Trump is not the Bill Clinton of 1995."
What he left out is that Trump already survived a midterm shellacking in 2022 – Democrats held the Senate, Republicans' House majority disappointed nearly everyone – and came back to win the presidency two years later.
The man Carville keeps predicting is finished keeps on winning.
What's Actually Happening
Carville's entire case rests on one real fact dressed up as a conclusion.
Trump's approval ratings are down – somewhere in the low-to-mid thirties depending on the survey, weaker than he'd like heading into November.
Trump had weak approval numbers in 2022 too.
Republicans underperformed.
Democrats celebrated.
And then Trump ran again and won by more than seven million votes.
Carville watched all of that happen and still decided "approval ratings are down" is the same sentence as "the president is going to voluntarily resign and demand a pardon."
They are not even in the same universe.
Trump doesn't quit.
He doesn't hand power over.

He doesn't admit defeat and asks for a favor.
Why Carville Keeps Making These Predictions
That is how this racket works.
A bold prediction gets you booked.
It gets you shares.
It gets you a week of headlines regardless of whether it's true.
And when it turns out to be completely wrong – when Trump is still in the White House by Easter 2027 with no pardon conversation ever having happened – the news cycle will have moved on and Carville will already be making his next prediction with the same total certainty.
The cost of being wrong, when you are a Democrat strategist on cable news, is exactly zero.
Trump, meanwhile, is still in the White House.
