Joe Biden nominated Sarah Bloom Raskin – wife of Maryland Congressman and Russian collusion conspiracy theorist Jamie Raskin – to serve as Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve.
Sarah Raskin is a radical environmentalist who supports Green New Deal-style policies to destroy the fossil-fuel industry.
Republicans on the Senate Banking Committee boycotted all hearings for Sarah Raskin and Biden’s other nominees to deny Democrats a quorum so they could not advance his disastrous picks out of Committee.
Sarah Raskin’s nomination was on thin ice, and West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin delivered the death blow.
Manchin announced he would not support Raskin’s nomination due to her opposition to fossil fuels.
“Now, more than ever, the United States must have policy leaders and economic experts who are focused on the most pressing issues facing the American people and our nation – specifically rising inflation and energy costs. I have carefully reviewed Sarah Bloom Raskin’s qualifications and previous public statements. Her previous public statements have failed to satisfactorily address my concerns about the critical importance of financing an all-of-the-above energy policy to meet our nation’s critical energy needs,” Manchin stated.
Critics like Manchin saw that Biden intended to entangle the Federal Reserve into enacting the Green New Deal by using the Fed’s massive powers to make it more difficult for oil and natural gas companies to compete in the marketplace.
Manchin urged Biden to back down from this reckless policy.
“The time has come for the Federal Reserve Board to return to its defining principles and dual mandate of controlling inflation by ensuring stable prices and maximum employment,” Manchin added.
Since no Republican intended to vote for Raskin, Manchin’s announcement made it clear there were 51 votes to defeat this nomination.
This is another political setback for Biden.
It became easy for Senators to oppose an anti-fossil fuel radical as gas prices hit record highs.
Raskin using her position on the Federal Reserve to push America towards more expensive wind and solar energy sources is a complete nonstarter in this political environment.
