The Woman Who Fought Housing Segregation Just Chose the Most Segregated Zip Code She Could Find
The property sits in Point Dume, a gated seaside enclave north of Malibu where neighbors include Marc Andreessen, Sergey Brin, and Laurene Powell Jobs.
The 4,000-square-foot home features coastal views, a private putting green, multiple wine refrigerators, and a driveway that fits five cars.
It cost $8.15 million.
The census tract containing Point Dume – tract 8004.08 – is 94% White and 0.2% Black.
That's a neighborhood with essentially zero Black residents.
And Kamala Harris chose it deliberately, signing the papers and writing the check.
This is the same woman who, in 2012 as California attorney general, signed a Supreme Court brief arguing that even racially neutral housing policies should be illegal if they produced a "disparate impact" across racial groups.
This is the same woman who proposed $100 billion in assistance for families in historically redlined communities.
This is the same woman who spent four years as vice president promoting the Biden administration's efforts to combat racial bias in home appraisals.
She didn't just talk about housing justice.
She made it the centerpiece of her political identity for two decades.
The Quote That Tells You Everything
In 2019, Harris told the Washington Post exactly what living among black Americans meant to her – or at least what she wanted voters to think it meant.
She described attending Howard University as a revelation – finally surrounded by large numbers of black peers after a childhood spent in overwhelmingly White communities.
"When you're at a historically black college or university," she said, "it just becomes about you understanding that there is a whole world of people who are like you."
She was moved, she said, by the sheer number of the black community around her.

Now she's put $8 million down in a neighborhood where non-White surfers have documented a culture of hostility toward outsiders.
A pair of non-White surfers published a 2025 guide to Point Dume describing how locals challenge visitors by asking whether they live in the area – an antagonistic tactic, they wrote, designed to discourage minorities from returning.
"There are barriers to access that keep most BIPOC people away," they wrote.
Kamala Harris read none of that and wrote the check anyway.
She's Planning to Run Again
Harris told Al Sharpton at the National Action Network Convention in April that she's thinking about running for president in 2028.
"Listen, I might, I might. I'm thinking about it," she said – to a room full of Black activists who erupted in chants of "Run again!"
She's going to stand on a stage in front of Black voters and talk about housing justice.
She's going to invoke redlining and disparate impact and $100 billion for minority communities.
And she's going to drive home to Point Dume.
This is not a coincidence or an oversight.
This is the Democrat Party's operating model – lecture Americans about systemic racism from gated communities designed to ensure no working-class family of any color can afford to move in.

The voters she's planning to ask for a third chance noticed.
