Kevin Costner gave this huge update about his return to Yellowstone

Yellowstone will end its run this fall with the second half of season five.

The fate of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton character was up in the air.

But now Kevin Costner gave this huge update about his return to Yellowstone.

Kevin Costner confirms he’s done with Yellowstone

Kevin Costner finally made the worst kept secret in Hollywood official.

Costner won’t return for the final episodes of Yellowstone.

The star made it official in a post on his Instagram, saying he couldn’t make the schedule work with the filming of his movie Horizon: An American Saga.

“I just want to reach out and let you know that after this long year and a half of working on Horizon and doing all the things that that’s required,” Costner began.

Costner told fans “and thinking about Yellowstone, that beloved series that I love, that I know you love. I just realized that I’m not going to be able to continue, season five or into the future.”

“I loved it and I know you loved it, and I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be returning,” Costner concluded. “I love the relationship we’ve been able to develop, and I’ll see you at the movies.”

Costner explains why he won’t be back on Yellowstone

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Costner said he cleared up his status on Yellowstone, so media outlets stopped asking him about whether he would appear in the show’s final episodes.

“It wasn’t tough,” Costner explained. “It was a necessary decision to say, ‘Hey, OK, I don’t want to really talk about this anymore. It’s time to move on.’”

The final episodes were already in production.

So, there was little chance of Costner actually making an appearance.

But some fans still held out hope that Costner and series creator Taylor Sheridan could make it work.

There were reported creative differences where Costner allegedly demanded script approval for his character.

Sheridan wasn’t willing to meet that request.

Nor was the studio willing to acquiesce to Costner’s demand for a truncated filming schedule so Costner could make his Horizon movies, the first chapter of which is due in theaters this Thursday and the second arrives in August.

To Costner, that made it easy to walk away and cut out a source of endless drama from his life.

“I gave this thing five seasons,” Costner stated.

“I was really happy to do it. And I don’t need drama. So, let’s just take that drama away, let’s take the guessing [away]. The fans have been way too good to me. And my obligation is to go on and continue to make things that mean something to them,” Costner concluded.

While Yellowstone is ending, this isn’t the finish for the franchise.

Matthew McConaughey is rumored to play the lead in a spinoff, 2024, that will pick up right where Yellowstone leaves off.
