Kevin McCarthy only won election as Speaker of the House because of the votes from Trump supporters.
Now conservatives are not going to be happy.
That’s because Kevin McCarthy is about to take one phone that will have Trump supporters hopping mad.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is growing nervous that his blank check grift from American taxpayer money is coming to an end.
Polls show an increasing number of Americans favor cutting off military aid to Ukraine.
A Chicago Council on Global Affairs poll found the public evenly split on funneling taxpayer money to Ukraine.
48 percent supported arming the Ukrainians with 47 percent opposed.
The survey also found just 33 percent of Republicans backed a prolonged effort to fund Joe Biden’s war against Russia in Ukraine.
Now Zelensky is trying to arrange a call with Speaker McCarthy to beg and plead to keep the spigot of U.S. taxpayer money flowing into Ukraine open.
Punchbowl News reports:
The Ukrainian government is trying to set up a phone call between Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to multiple sources familiar with the effort.
The call hasn’t been scheduled yet.
The broader context here is important. A number of House Republicans have publicly turned sour on providing more funding to Ukraine to counter the ongoing Russian invasion, although there’s still majority support in the House for the embattled country. The United States has spent more than $113 billion so far on the war, with more than nearly $50 billion in direct military aid.
Ukraine is one of the most corrupt countries on earth.
And of the more than $113 billion funneled to Ukraine nearly $60 billion was in economic aid that the government has no idea where it went.
Conservatives want the government to worry about securing America’s border before one more cent is spent on protecting the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
Before the Midterm election, McCarthy set off alarm bells in the Washington, D.C. Swamp and Kyiv by saying the days of a blank check for Ukraine were over.
“I think people are gonna be sitting in a recession and they’re not going to write a blank check to Ukraine. They just won’t do it. […] It’s not a free blank check. And then there’s the things [the Biden administration] is not doing domestically. Not doing the border and people begin to weigh that. Ukraine is important, but at the same time it can’t be the only thing they do and it can’t be a blank check,” McCarthy told Punchbowl news.
Zelensky obviously wants to bring the full brunt of his emotional blackmail on McCarthy.
Zelensky even telegraphed his message claiming America’s sons and daughters would have to die in this war if Ukraine falls.
But will this message resonate?
Republicans see the danger in Joe Biden’s war – which could go nuclear at any moment – and the immorality of Biden neglecting the problems of the American people to line bank accounts in Ukraine.
Will Speaker McCarthy hold firm on ending Ukraine’s blank check?
That will be the first major test of his Speakership.
