While she headed up the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Lois Lerner was notorious among conservatives.
She wielded the agency’s power to target conservative non-profits, often delaying approval of their tax status, and forcing groups to spend resources proving their legitimacy to the IRS.
Though she was protected from prosecution by Obama’s Department of Justice, that could all be about to change.
Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) appeared on Fox Business over the weekend and in the strongest possible terms called for Trump’s Department of Justice to investigate Lois Lerner.
“So, look, we think that Lois Lerner did particularly two things wrong. Number one, she denied people due process and equal protection of the law based on their political philosophy. We’re convinced that there’s overwhelming evidence to suggest that that’s true. And that’s a felony. Secondly, we believe that she lied to the Inspecter General of the Treasury Department when they were investigating that very thing.
“What we want is a new Justice Department to take a fresh look at this while we are well within the statute of limitations, and if they can move forward with a prosecution.”
In recent decades, and particularly during the Obama administration, executive branch agencies like the Department of Justice and IRS have been geared to target political opponents.
Many in Congress believe Lois Lerner overstepped her authority.
The Obama administration protected her from prosecution.
But will justice finally be served from the Trump administration?
What do you think?
Should the Department of Justice launch a criminal investigation into Lois Lerner’s antics at the IRS?
