McDonald’s Has Been Playing You With the Spicy McNuggets and a Franchisee Just Admitted It

McDonald's sold out of its Spicy Chicken McNuggets in weeks when they debuted in 2020, but then turned around and yanked them off the menu.

They've done it five more times since then.

And an insider finally explained why McDonald's will never leave Spicy Chicken McNuggets on the menu.

The Game McDonald's Has Been Running on You

The Spicy Chicken McNuggets returned September 1 at participating locations nationwide, breaded in a spicy tempura coating made with aged cayenne and chili peppers.

The Mighty Hot Sauce is back alongside them for the first time since 2021.

Here's what McDonald's has never told you publicly, but a franchise operator just let slip on social media.

An anonymous McDonald's franchisee known as McFranchisee – who regularly shares behind-the-scenes details about restaurant operations – explained the real reason Spicy McNuggets keep disappearing right when you want them most.

It isn't about supply.

It isn't about ingredients.

"It competes with one of your top core products," the franchisee wrote when a customer asked why McDonald's doesn't just make them permanent. "I now have to carry two different nugs and keep them fresh from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. instead of just one."

So every time McDonald's brings them back, it's a calculated decision – not a gift to loyal customers.

Walking away from them is exactly what drives you back through that drive-through line the next time.

That's the whole point.

Why Texas Is Getting Something the Rest of America Isn't

While the rest of the country gets the nuggets, Texas is getting something different entirely.

McDonald's launched an exclusive Texas Meal at participating Lone Star State locations – a 10-piece order of Chicken McNuggets (spicy or regular), medium fries, and a medium drink, served in a Texas-themed box printed with local imagery and the word "Howdy."

The bigger draw is the collectible cups.

Texas-based muralist Avery Orendorf – whose handpainted work covers walls across the state – designed seven cup designs, each one honoring a different Texas region: Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin/Central Texas, West Texas, East Texas, and the Rio Grande Valley/South Texas.

The Instagram post teasing the Texas Meal pulled more than 19,000 likes and more than 300 comments.

Fans in other states were not quiet about it.

"They should do every state!" wrote one commenter.

"Do Florida next!" said another.

Texas gets honored because Texas earned it.

The rest of the country gets nuggets.

Texas gets the nuggets, the meal, the box, and a local artist on every cup.

What McDonald's Actually Knows About You

The franchisee's explanation cuts deeper than kitchen logistics.

McDonald's has the resources and the supply chain to offer Spicy McNuggets year-round if they wanted to.

They don't want to.

The same franchisee indicated that the Mighty Hot Sauce would actually be easy to keep around permanently – it's the nuggets themselves being used as a lever.

"It works well for a short-term LTO but probably isn't the best idea for a permanent place," the franchisee said.

Translation: the scarcity is the product.

You're not buying Spicy McNuggets.

You're buying the relief of getting them before they disappear again.

McDonald's has run this play five times in six years, and it has worked every single time – because they understand that what people value most isn't what they can have anytime.

It's what they might lose.

The Spicy Chicken McNuggets and Mighty Hot Sauce are available at participating locations nationwide while supplies last.

The Texas Meal is exclusive to the Lone Star State.

If you're in Texas – get the cup.
