Megyn Kelly’s career is trapped in a downward spiral.
Her Sunday night show tanked in the ratings and now she is trying to make a comeback with a daytime talk show.
So no one could understand why she just said this one thing about Donald Trump.
Kelly famously feuded with Trump during the 2016 election.
She blamed that rivalry – as well as Trump’s barrage of social media criticism – for why she left Fox News for NBC.
But now that her daytime talk show is set to debut on September 26th, she said she hopes it is a Trump free zone.
“I don’t want to talk about Trump all day,” she said. “In fact, the bar is very high for Trump coverage (on ‘Megyn Kelly Live’). If you want Trump, you can watch virtually every channel in the country and get Trump non-stop. I think people are looking for a break from that. Not just Trump, it’s inside the Beltway. I don’t want to talk about Mitch McConnell either, or Chuck Schumer or Nancy Pelosi.”
“Live! With Kelly and Ryan” is a celebrity- and entertainment-oriented talk show. Kelly said her program will be uplifting and more substantive: recent trial runs had segments on reacting to the Equifax breach and protecting yourself from attack. Mental health, bullying, coping with divorce and tips for job interviews are the type of topics she’ll cover.
Not news, but not fluff, either.”
But feuding with Trump was the only time Kelly was relevant. When she struck out on her own at NBC, she flopped.
Her Sunday night show proved that without Trump or the Fox News machine behind her, Kelly is not a big enough TV star to draw an audience.
And talking about Trump has been good for cable news. Ratings are up at every channel as Trump dominates the news cycle.
Kelly’s promise to ignore Trump guarantees her show will be one that hurts for relevancy and an audience.
