Donald Trump was elected to erase the Obama legacy.
And that included Michelle Obama’s pet programs.
But no knew he would take this drastic step.
The centerpiece of Michelle Obama’s time as First Lady was her heavy-handed school lunch rules.
She forced her elite liberal values on school kids across America with so-called “healthy lunch” guidelines.
But what café liberals in New York and San Francisco enjoy is not what fills the stomachs of growing children.
Parents and students across the country complained about the skimpy lunches that sent them home hungry.
Donald Trump took action and shocked pundits when he ended the program.
The Hill reports:
“Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue took steps Monday to roll back healthy school lunch standards promoted by former first lady Michelle Obama in one of his first regulatory acts.
In an interim final rule, aimed at giving schools more flexibility, Perdue and his department are postponing further sodium reductions for at least three years and allowing schools to serve non-whole grain rich products occasionally as well as 1 percent flavored milk.
The rule allows states to exempt schools in the 2017-2018 school year from having to replace all their grains with whole-grain rich products if they are having a hard time meeting the standard.
USDA said it will take “all necessary regulatory actions to implement a long-term solution.”
“This announcement is the result of years of feedback from students, schools, and food service experts about the challenges they are facing in meeting the final regulations for school meals,” Perdue said in a statement.
“If kids aren’t eating the food, and it’s ending up in the trash, they aren’t getting any nutrition – thus undermining the intent of the program.”
Democrats were up in arms over the changes.
The Washington Free Beacon reports:
“Democratic Reps. Jim McGovern (Mass.), Rosa DeLauro (Conn.), and Chellie Pingree (Maine) criticized Perdue’s actions in a joint statement.
“Just days into his new job as Secretary of USDA, Secretary Perdue has decided to put special interests ahead of the health of America’s children,” DeLauro said.
“It is outrageous that President Trump and his administration are now pushing a policy that weakens the essential nutrition standards which have strengthened access to healthy food for so many students,” McGovern said.
“It’s disappointing that one of Secretary Perdue’s first actions as the head of USDA is to rollback school nutrition standards with this rule,” Pingree said.”
But Trump wasn’t elected to please the Democrats.
He was elected to roll back the Obama agenda.
And gutting Michelle Obama’s nanny state school lunch program was a good start.
