Nancy Pelosi had a plan.
She was going to make a big announcement about her latest scheme to hang on to power.
But her big announcement turned into the biggest embarrassment of her life.
Nancy Pelosi has a problem.
Over 30 Democrats running for the House this year pledged not support her for Speaker.
In theory, there are enough Democrats committed to voting no to deny her the Speaker’s gavel.
These younger Democrats want a generational change in leadership.
Pelosi tried to head this off by claiming she would only serve as a temporary Speaker and resign when Trump was out of office.
This did not satisfy younger Democrats.
The Hill reports:
“We don’t need transitional leadership; we need new leadership,” Rep. Filemon Vela (D-Texas) said Monday in a phone call. “And we need to have new leadership from the beginning, when we get back in January.”
Vela said he counts at least a dozen incumbent Democrats who will vote against Pelosi in January’s floor vote, regardless of the outcome of next month’s midterm elections.
“I’m going to the floor and I’m going to vote for somebody else,” Vela said.
The Democratic leadership elections will take place at the end of the November, and a formal floor vote for Speaker will take place in early January.
Pelosi is desperate to hang on to power.
That’s why she trotted out this idea of being a transitional Speaker.
But younger Democrats appear ready to start the move away from Pelosi now.
