Nancy Pelosi spent 38 years in Congress never accidentally saying anything.
She said it anyway.
And the 86-year-old Speaker Emerita was asked whether she'd support Newsom for president – and answered a question nobody asked.
The Slip That Confirmed Everything
Pelosi was careful.
She said Democrats should "let them make their announcements."
Then she said it: "When he decides to run, we'll find out what that will be."
Not if. When.
The woman who politically outmaneuvered every Speaker before her – who personally forced a sitting president out of his own reelection race in 2024 – just used the word "when" about Gavin Newsom running for president.
That wasn't a slip.
That was a signal.

Pelosi has been running a quiet Newsom 2028 operation for months.
Axios reported in February that she has been publicly and privately vouching for the California governor, calling him "masterful" to The New Yorker and telling Politico he'd "make a great president."
She called him "family" on Tuesday – which he is, distantly, through his uncle's marriage into the Pelosi family.
More importantly: she called him hardworking.
"Ever since he was a boy, I would see him work hard in his studies," Pelosi told the crowd.
A woman who never wastes a word just praised a man she's known since childhood as "responsible" and "extraordinarily talented" – in front of cameras, at a national political event, two years before a presidential election he claims he hasn't decided to enter.
What Newsom's Record Actually Looks Like
Here's what "extraordinarily talented" Gavin Newsom built in California.
He pledged in 2021 to end family homelessness in the state within five years.
His deadline was May 11, 2026.
According to California Senate Housing Committee data, 25,369 people in families with children were experiencing homelessness as of 2024 – with 21% unsheltered.
A Public Policy Institute of California report this spring found nearly 300,000 K-12 students experiencing homelessness.

He spent an estimated $25–$37 billion on homelessness programs since taking office in 2019.
The State Auditor designated multiple Newsom administration agencies "high-risk" for waste, fraud, and abuse – the agency's harshest rating, reserved for its worst-performing programs.
Nobody could account for where the money went.
That's the record he's taking national.
The Machine Is Already Running
While Newsom tells reporters he's "still deciding," his political operation has been running for two years.
Axios reported last week that Newsom has quietly raised more than $1.7 million for state party committees across the country – more than any other prospective 2028 candidate – with South Carolina, the first primary state, receiving over $300,000.
South Carolina Democrat Party chair Jay Parmley told Axios: "His email list is platinum."
Newsom has gained over 100,000 new small-dollar donors, more than half of them outside California.
He's not deciding.
He's running.
Newsom spent seven years running California – a state with the GDP of Germany and total control of every lever of government – and couldn't keep children off the street with $37 billion in hand.
Now he wants to run America.

His pitch to the rest of the country will be built on San Francisco values, open-border policies, and the same government machinery that burned through billions in homelessness spending while the State Auditor flagged agency after agency for fraud and abuse.
Pelosi knows all of this and is boosting him anyway.
That tells you everything about what Democrats think 2028 is really about – not fixing anything, but taking back power.
Pelosi said Tuesday she won't be "involved in a political presidential campaign."
She's already involved.
She has been for months.
The slip was the point.
