Nancy Pelosi thought she had Republicans right where she wanted them.
But then the tables were turned.
Nancy Pelosi just suffered a defeat that could doom her to a humiliating retirement.
Speaker Pelosi thought she trapped Republicans into supporting a commission to “investigate” the January 6 events at the Capitol.
Pelosi wanted Republicans to agree to the commission so when the Democrats weaponized the commission’s report to use against the GOP in the 2022 midterms, Republicans could not attack the commission as a partisan witch hunt.
That plan collapsed when Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell came out in opposition to the legislation creating the commission citing how the bill stacked the deck in the Democrats favor.
“House Democrats have handled this proposal in partisan bad faith going right back to the beginning. From initially offering a laughable starting point to continuing to insist on various features under the hood that are designed to centralize control over the commission’s process and its conclusions in Democratic hands,” McConnell stated.
McConnell added that a Congressional commission would also duplicate the work being done by law enforcement.
“It’s not at all clear what new facts or additional investigation yet another commission could actually lay on top of existing efforts by law enforcement and Congress,” McConnell added.
McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy coming out strongly against the commission led fence-sitting Republicans like South Dakota Senator Mike Rounds to come out in opposition to the commission.
“We’ve had a chance to hear from House leadership about what they saw in the bill. It doesn’t appear right now that they believe that it is bipartisan in nature, which to me is extremely disappointing,” Rounds stated. “The way that the bill is written right now, I would feel compelled to vote against it.”
Even Never-Trumpers like Susan Collins and Mitt Romney came out against the commission, dooming Nancy Pelosi’s plan to have the Republicans help the Democrats write attack ads against GOP candidates by supporting the creation of a January 6 investigative body.
