Nancy Pelosi and Donald Trump’s public battle just swung decisively in one direction.
The Democrats never saw this coming.
And Nancy Pelosi retreated after Donald Trump drew one line in the sand.
Nancy Pelosi fully intended to ram a bill through Congress reauthorizing the FISA law that the Obama administration used to spy on the Trump campaign using her proxy voting scheme.
But Pelosi scuttled those plans after a revolt by Republicans led by President Trump.
POLITICO reported that, “Speaker Nancy Pelosi and top Democrats postponed a vote on Wednesday to reauthorize key parts of the federal surveillance program known as FISA, after an 11th hour revolt by Republicans and progressive Democrats.”
Pelosi has no timetable for when the bill would be brought back up.
“Democrats have not decided when or if they will take up the bill. The legislation had broad bipartisan support in the Senate, but lost support from GOP lawmakers after sudden resistance from President Donald Trump and the Justice Department,” POLITCIO added.
Pelosi’s retreat came after Donald Trump announced his intention to veto the legislation.
The President wrote, “If the FISA Bill is passed tonight on the House floor, I will quickly VETO it. Our Country has just suffered through the greatest political crime in its history. The massive abuse of FISA was a big part of it!”
FISA allows for a secret court to allow the government to spy on American citizens through a secretive warrant application process.
In reality, the FISA court acts as a rubber stamp for the government, approving over 33,000 warrants and denying just 12 over a more than 30-year period.
The FBI took advantage of this leniency by feeding the FISA court lies and fake news from the Christopher Steele dossier to spy on Carter Page and the Trump campaign.
Democrats thought they could sneak reauthorization of this law through during the coronavirus pandemic.
But the President foiled Pelosi’s plans with his veto threat.
