There’s a real scandal going on in Washington that has nothing to do with Russia or racism.
Democrat Senator Bob Menendez (NJ) is on trial for corruption.
Menendez and a Florida donor of his are both on trial facing multiple fraud, conspiracy, and bribery charges.
Prosecutors say Menendez received hundreds of thousands of dollars for his political campaign and legal defense fund and that his donor funded expensive trips for him in exchange for help with business disputes.
Their most serious charge carries a maximum 20-year sentence.
Menendez is trying to use his position as a Senator to alter the trial schedule.
In their reply to his motion, government prosecutors wrote:
“This case is not about the Affordable Care Act, the debt ceiling, or the balance of power in the Senate. The political consequences of defendant Menendez’s trial or criminal conviction should not be considered in the courtroom. This Court has consistently recognized that defendant Menendez is not entitled to special treatment because of his status. It should maintain that principle here.”
Liberal blogs like Salon and Talking Points Memo realize the national significance of Menendez’ possible conviction.
TPM wrote:
The nightmare scenario for Democrats is Menendez is found guilty and relinquishes his seat before Gov. Chris Christie (R) completes his term in January, allowing Christie to appoint Menendez’s replacement and handing Republicans a crucial extra vote in the Senate. That appointee could also run for reelection in 2018, giving the GOP an outside chance in Democratic-leaning New Jersey.
If Menendez is convicted in a swift trial and Christie appoints the replacement, ObamaCare repeal may be back on the table.
It only failed by one vote thanks to corrupt John McCain’s vote.
Will the media start talking about a REAL case of corruption?
Or will they continue to ignore it because it involves a high-ranking Democrat Senator?
