Pope Francis has won celebratory headlines across the so-called “mainstream” media for his liberal political views.
But he has often confused traditional Catholics with his statements.
And now millions of Christians are scratching their heads after one strange statement.
Francis changed Church teaching to oppose the death penalty in all cases.
The New York Times reports:
Pope Francis has declared that the death penalty is wrong in all cases, a definitive change in church teaching that is likely to challenge faithful Catholic politicians, judges and officials in the United States and other countries who have argued that their church was not entirely opposed to capital punishment.
Francis added the change to the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church, the book of doctrine that is taught to Catholic children worldwide and studied by adults in a church with 1.2 billion members.
Francis said executions were unacceptable in all cases because they are “an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person,” the Vatican announced on Thursday.
The church also says it will work “with determination” for the abolition of capital punishment worldwide.
Previously, Catholic teachings had allowed for the death penalty in some cases after due process and a fair trial.
According to the Death Penalty Information Center, 23 Americans were executed after being sentenced to death in 2017.
Pope Francis weighed in against the death penalty, which is an important issue to leftists, but stayed silent on a referendum in Ireland to repeal the nation’s abortion ban.
It passed with 65 percent of the vote while the leader of the Catholic Church sat on his hands.
While the death penalty was carried out in 23 cases in America, 2017 saw well over 300,000 babies killed in Planned Parenthood’s abortion mills.
Traditional Catholics were appalled by the Pope refusing to stand for life – which is one of the most fundamental values in all of Christendom.
