The Army couldn't fill its recruitment quotas and nobody in Washington, DC would say why.
But Robert F Kennedy Jr said it.
And Robert Kennedy Jr said two words about school lunch that the food lobby has spent decades and billions of dollars keeping out of a federal official's mouth.
The Numbers That Should End This Debate
When JFK was president, three percent of American kids were obese.
Today it's 20 percent – and that number keeps climbing.
77 percent of American young people between ages 17 and 24 now can't qualify for military service.
That's not a statistic that appeared overnight.
The Pentagon disqualified 52,000 applicants from active duty in fiscal year 2023 alone because of obesity – more than the entire recruitment shortfall that same year.
Kennedy put it plainly on Monday night: "It's not because they suddenly became indolent or hungry or lazy. It's because we've been mass poisoning them with ultra-processed foods."
He's right.
Childhood obesity rates for 2 to 19 year olds have more than tripled since Kennedy's uncle launched the Presidential Council on Physical Fitness in 1961 – a program JFK created specifically because he was alarmed that American kids were already falling behind European children in fitness.
That was at 3 percent.
We're now at 20 percent.
The food industry spent sixty years doing what tobacco companies spent four decades doing – capturing the agencies supposed to regulate them and using the access to poison an entire generation.
What the New School Lunch Rules Actually Do
Kennedy laid out the specifics Monday night, and they're more aggressive than anything the federal government has attempted before.
The new school lunch program eliminates 70 percent of the calories kids currently consume that come from ultra-processed foods.
Protein goes to the center of the plate.
Refined grains go out.
Fruit juice – which schools have used for decades as a substitute for actual fruit – goes out.

His agency is adding $32 million in one-time grants to help schools rebuild their kitchens and start cooking from scratch again.
The GRAS loophole – the FDA designation that let food manufacturers essentially declare their own ingredients safe – is finally getting scrutiny.
Former FDA Commissioner Dr. David Kessler filed a petition demanding a safety review of processed refined carbohydrates including corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, and refined flours.
Kennedy told 60 Minutes the FDA will act on it.
"The questions that he's asking are questions that the FDA should've been asking a long, long time ago," Kennedy said.
This Is What Regulatory Capture Looks Like When It Ends
The food industry's relationship with the FDA followed the exact same playbook as Big Pharma and Big Tobacco.
Fund the studies.
Influence the guidelines.
Use the GRAS designation as a revolving door to approve ingredients the industry deems safe by its own standards.
Kellogg's, PepsiCo, and General Mills have spent more than $100 million over the past decade lobbying against exactly this kind of scrutiny.
Kennedy called it hijacked – and that's the accurate word.
Hundreds of additives banned across Europe remain legal and ubiquitous in American processed foods.
The new dietary guidelines – released last month – explicitly warn Americans against packaged, prepared, ready-to-eat foods and sugar-sweetened beverages for the first time in history.

That's the federal government finally admitting what the industry spent billions of dollars preventing it from saying.
Here's what fires me up about this story: the military figured out the national security angle years ago.
Retired generals started sounding the alarm because they couldn't fill their recruitment quotas.
The Army fell 25 percent below its recruitment goals in 2022, with obesity as the single largest disqualifying factor.
The defense establishment saw the crisis clearly.
Washington, DC – owned by the food lobby – chose profits over soldiers.
Kennedy is the first person with authority to actually do something about it, and he's doing it.
JFK launched a fitness council in 1961 because 3 percent obesity alarmed him.
His nephew just launched a war on the food industry at 20 percent.
America finally has someone at HHS willing to say what it is – mass poisoning – and do something about it.
