Ron DeSantis issued the big threat that has Democrats running for cover

Democrats are trying to take down Florida Governor Ron DeSantis out of fear he is the strongest potential GOP challenger in 2024.

But Democrats got some bad news.

And that’s because Ron DeSantis issued the big threat that has Democrats running for cover.

Governor DeSantis kept schools open last year during the pandemic at a time when Democrats wanted them closed to hurt Donald Trump’s re-election campaign.

DeSantis made it clear that this school year classrooms will be open five days a week for in-person instruction and life will go on as normal in Florida.

As part of that plan, Governor DeSantis signed an executive order banning schools from imposing mask mandates on children.

But several school districts tried to defy the governor by imposing mask mandates on children.

That provoked a response from Governor DeSantis, but it was not the one Democrats were hoping for.

DeSantis’ office issued a statement announcing that the Florida Board of Education could withhold the salaries of any school administrator who required children to wear masks in school.

The statement read:

“With respect to enforcing any financial consequences for noncompliance of state law regarding these rules and ultimately the rights of parents to make decisions about their children’s education and health care decisions, it would be the goal of the State Board of Education to narrowly tailor any financial consequences to the offense committed. For example, the State Board of Education could move to withhold the salary of the district superintendent or school board members, as a narrowly tailored means to address the decision-makers who led to the violation of law.

“Education funding is intended to benefit students first and foremost, not systems. The Governor’s priorities are protecting parents’ rights and ensuring that every student has access to a high-quality education that meets their unique needs.”

Democrats hoped to turn DeSantis’ success in navigating Florida through the pandemic while keeping the state open into a political liability heading into his 2022 re-election campaign.

Dragging Governor DeSantis into a fight about schools was central to that strategy.

But DeSantis’ move to defund school officials who mandate masks showed the Governor is ready for this fight.
