Democrats thought they scored a major victory.
That was not the case.
And Trey Gowdy delivered a reality check that is devastating news for Democrats.
Democrats and the corporate-controlled media cheered the fact that a jury in heavily Democrat Washington, D.C. – which also contained multiple Hillary Clinton donors – acquitted Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann of lying to the FBI in a September 2016 meeting where he pushed the FBI to investigate a conspiracy theory about Donald Trump and Russia.
The Left claimed this acquittal – even though the jury’s decision was motivated more by politics than anything else – debunked the idea that the FBI and the Clinton campaign collaborated on a hoax to bring down Donald Trump.
On his Sunday night Fox News program, Trey Gowdy took a sledgehammer to that narrative.
“I’m sorry to disappoint the Left, but this verdict does not end the Durham investigation,” Gowdy told viewers.
“Durham’s job is to find out what led the FBI to do what they did way before September of 2016,” Gowdy added.
Gowdy – a former federal prosecutor – explained that in jury trials, the outcome was out of the prosecutor’s hands.
That means this one acquittal should not be taken as a statement on the substance of Special Counsel John Durham’s investigation into the origin of the Russian collusion hoax.
“Moreover, prosecutors do lose cases. It’s not the end of the world and it’s not the end of an investigation. Proving anything beyond a reasonable doubt is hard. And the only people who think it’s easy are people on television who’ve never had to do it,” Gowdy added.
Gowdy continued by saying the FBI was the real loser in this case, as Bureau General Counsel James Baker took the meeting with Sussmann knowing full well he was a Clinton campaign lawyer and a Democrat partisan.
“How would you like to sell that to a jury?” he said. “How would you like to convince the jury the FBI was somehow victimized by a lawyer the entire world knew was connected with Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National Committee,” Gowdy exclaimed.
One of the problems with the Durham prosecution of Sussmann was that it treated the FBI like a victim of his alleged deceit, when in reality the FBI was a willing participant in the Russian collusion hoax.
“There’s a difference between being victimized and being duped. The FBI was duped wittingly or unwittingly. They took a meeting they should never have taken, and they got played, and that’s the FBI’s fault. So yes, somebody lost the trial this week. But it wasn’t John Durham. It was the FBI,” Gowdy concluded.
