Day one of the Senate’s second impeachment trial for Donald Trump featured one major surprise.
Donald Trump and his supporters were furious.
And that’s because Trump got some bad news about this Republican Senator changing their vote on impeachment.
The first day of the impeachment trial did not go well for Donald Trump’s lawyers.
Even Trump’s staunchest allies like Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham ripped the performance of Trump’s lawyers.
Trump’s lawyers turning in a poor showing had consequences as Louisiana Republican Senator Bill Cassidy changed his vote, after previously voting to dismiss the article of impeachment as unconstitutional, to allow the trial to proceed.
Cassidy claimed he changed his vote because the Democrat impeachment managers turned in a strong showing and Trump’s lawyers dropped the ball.
“The House managers were focused. They were organized. They relied upon precedent, the Constitution, and legal scholars. They made a compelling argument. President Trump’s team was disorganized. They did everything they could but to talk about the question at hand,” Cassidy stated, “And when they talked about it, they kind of glided over, almost as if they were embarrassed of their arguments.”
“If I’m an impartial juror and one side is doing a great job and the other job is doing a terrible job on the issue at hand? As an impartial juror, I’m going to vote for the side that did the good job,” Cassidy added.
Cassidy’s vote switch does not put Trump in any danger of being convicted.
44 Republicans still voted to dismiss the article of impeachment on constitutional grounds.
But Cassidy’s change of heart allowed the corporate media to run wild with a narrative about how the impeachment trial is a debacle for Trump by focusing on one Senator’s vote as opposed to the bigger picture, which is that Democrats are wasting everyone’s time since they are nowhere near the votes necessary to convict Trump.
