Later this year Section 702 of the FISA Act expires.
Section 702 allows the government to unconstitutionally spy on American citizens without first obtaining a warrant if they are communicating with a terror suspect on foreign soil.
The Biden administration claimed this is an important surveillance tool for catching terrorists.
“Its value cannot be overstated,” Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen, who heads the Justice Department’s National Security Division stated. “Without 702, we will lose indispensable intelligence for our decision-makers and warfighters, as well as those of our allies. And we have no fallback authority that could come close to making up for that loss.”
Defenders of the surveillance state falsely claimed the government isn’t using its illegal warrantless spying powers to target American citizens.
“We’re talking only about the subset of national security targets the FBI is worried about, mainly in counterintelligence and counterterrorism cases — and only if they think there’s some foreign connection. They can’t just search that database for some routine domestic crime,” former NSA general counsel Glenn Gerstell said in an interview with The Washington Post.
That is manifestly untrue.
In 2021, Tucker Carlson revealed the Biden administration used Section 702 to spy on Carlson’s emails with members of the Russian government as Carlson tried to set up an interview with Vladimir Putin.
“But it’s not just political protests that the government is spying on,” Carlson stated. “Yesterday, we heard from a whistleblower within the U.S. government who reached out to warn us that the NSA, the National Security Agency, is monitoring our electronic communications and is planning to leak them in an attempt to take this show off the air.”
Carlson told viewers that the Biden administration spied on him to try to dig up dirt they could use to take Carlson’s show off the air.
“The whistleblower who is in a position to know repeated back to us information about a story that we are working on that could have only come directly from my texts and emails,” he said. “There’s no other possible source for that information. Period. They did it for political reasons. The Biden administration is spying on us. We have confirmed that.”
Joe Biden weaponized the federal government against conservatives.
Republicans in Congress can push back on the un-American power grab by allowing Section 702 to expire and end the warrantless spying on American citizens.
