Rachel Campos-Duffy asked the question every conservative has been thinking about.
Usha Vance didn't flinch.
"Whatever it is that he feels is the right thing for him to do, we're going to have a good time doing it," she said on Fox News. "Open mind and open heart."
Those four words are the clearest signal yet from inside the Vance household that a 2028 run is very much on the table.
She's not plotting or scheming.
She's not giving the political non-answer that terrified spouses give when they want their husband to stay home.
She said they'll make the best of it – whatever it is – and she meant it.
That's a woman who has already made peace with what's coming.
Trump Already Tipped His Hand
Three weeks ago, The Washington Post reported that President Trump told a group of Oval Office donors: "At the end of the day, we need to elect JD."
Fox News Digital confirmed the remark independently.
Trump publicly played it down – "way too early," he told reporters – but that's exactly what Trump does when something is true and he's not ready to make it official.
His own advisers couldn't even pretend otherwise.
One adviser told the Post that Trump has privately settled on Vance as the Republican heir apparent.
Even Marco Rubio's camp absorbed the signal – sources told Breitbart that Rubio has quietly assured allies he won't enter the race if Vance seeks the nomination.
"Marco has been very clear that JD is going to be the Republican nominee if he wants to be," one Rubio source said.
The Polling Backs It Up
This isn't wishful thinking by the MAGA base.
The numbers are overwhelming.
At CPAC earlier this year, Vance finished first in the 2028 straw poll with 53 percent – higher than any candidate in CPAC history not named Donald Trump.
The Center Square Voters' Voice Poll found Vance at 36 percent support among Republicans and right-leaning independents, roughly double every other candidate tested.
That's not a frontrunner – that's a coronation in slow motion.
He's the presumptive nominee.
The Advice That Matters More Than Any Poll
She was asked about the best political advice she's ever given her husband.
She didn't say "be tougher" or "hit back harder."
She told him to put down his phone.
"I think the best advice was to take a little bit of a social media break," Usha said.
JD did it for Lent – and Usha says it gave him perspective he couldn't have gotten any other way.
Think about what that tells you about this woman.
She's not pushing her husband toward power – she's making sure the man who gets there is the best version of himself.
She clerked for Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

She left a high-powered litigation career the moment Trump picked JD as his running mate.
She didn't do any of that for the title.
She did it because she believes in what her husband is doing.
What Comes Next
Usha told Campos-Duffy the family is "one step at a time" – and right now, that step is the midterms.
That's the right answer.
The 2026 midterms are the last major test before 2028 kicks into gear, and JD Vance is leading the charge.
When those results come in – and Republicans hold the Senate and push back in the House – the runway for a Vance 2028 campaign gets cleared in a hurry.
At that point, Trump's private words to donors become public.
And Usha Vance's "open mind and open heart" becomes an announcement.
