The Senate acquitted Donald Trump for a second time in an impeachment trial.
Democrats ended up with egg on their faces.
And you won’t believe who one Senator said was the biggest winner in impeachment.
North Carolina Republican Richard Burr was one of the seven GOP Senators who crossed over to join the Democrats in voting to convict Donald Trump on the article of impeachment, accusing him of inciting an insurrection.
Burr announced he would not run for a fourth term in 2022 and Burr’s vote roiled the race for his open senate seat in North Carolina.
South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham appeared on Fox News Sunday and stated his belief that the biggest winner of the impeachment was North Carolina native Laura Trump, who has floated the idea that she was considering moving back to her home state and running for the Senate.
“The biggest winner of this whole impeachment trial is Lara Trump,” Graham stated. “My dear friend Richard Burr, who I like and have been friends to a long time, just made Lara Trump almost the certain nominee for the Senate seat in North Carolina to replace him if she runs, and I certainly will be behind her because she represents the future of the Republican Party.”
Control of the Senate is up for grabs in 2022.
Republicans need to win just one seat to win back the majority.
To flip the Senate red, Republicans are going to have to hold open seats held by retiring Republican Senators.
Impeachment will create a dividing line in any Republican primary where voters choose Senate nominees.
And now that Richard Burr tainted the GOP establishment in North Carolina by voting to convict Trump, his actions will likely elevate Laura Trump to frontrunner status in a Republican primary.
