Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis are the top two contenders for the GOP presidential nomination.
Battle lines are already being drawn.
And you’ll be speechless when you see what Donald Trump just said about Ron DeSantis.
Donald Trump’s trademark is diminishing his rivals by bestowing upon them a nickname that highlights their least attractive character traits.
With polls showing DeSantis as Trump’s chief rival for the nomination The New York Times reported Trump tossed around the idea of tagging DeSantis with the “Meatball Ron” moniker as a dig at DeSantis’ weight.
“And he has insulted Mr. DeSantis in casual conversations, describing him as ‘Meatball Ron,’ an apparent dig at his appearance, or ‘Shutdown Ron,’ a reference to restrictions the governor put in place at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic,” The Times reported.
When Trump tried to brand DeSantis as DeSanctimonious before the 2022 Midterm election, it flopped hard as conservatives did not like Trump attacking the Florida Governor just before voters went to the polls.
Similarly the “Meatball Ron” nickname did not go over well as prominent conservatives like Mark Levin objected.
Trump seemed to back off the “Meatball Ron” nickname in favor of a new line of attack trying to undermine DeSantis’s strength on the COVID response.
“I will never call Ron DeSanctimonious ‘Meatball’ Ron, as the Fake News is insisting I will. Even though FoxNews killing lightweight Paul Ryan is revered by him, Low Energy Jeb Bush is his hero and always at his side, his beaches and State were closed for long periods of time, his testing, testing, testing for the China Virus didn’t work out too well, and his loyalty skills are really weak, it would be totally inappropriate to use the word ‘meatball’ as a moniker for Ron!” Trump posted on Truth social.
Ron DeSantis only issued a stay at home order in early April 2020 after an intense pressure campaign by President Trump.
DeSantis was the second Governor in America – following Georgia’s Brian Kemp – to lift the stay home order.
DeSantis was also the first to fully lift all COVID restrictions in September and fought to keep schools open.
The contours of the 2024 nomination fight are already taking shape.
And it looks like a two man race between Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis.
